The Basement
Everything is too fucking much right now.
Okay. We don't need to deal with everything.
First, let's find the light.
There.
That's a little better.
Not fixed. Not suddenly okay. Just a little easier to see.
That's enough for right now.
Now we can see the room.
When you first came down here, everything looked like one enormous dark problem.
The light doesn't make the problems disappear. It just lets us look at them one at a time.
The floor is solid.
You might feel unsteady. That doesn't necessarily mean everything underneath you is about to collapse.
The walls are unfinished.
That's okay. Unfinished doesn't mean unsafe, and it doesn't mean they have to be finished today.
There are things we still can't see.
We don't have to investigate every dark corner just because we've turned on one light.
There are stairs behind you.
You don't have to climb them yet. We just want you to know they haven't disappeared.
There is a leak in the corner.
We can see it now.
Earlier, in the dark, that sound might have felt like the whole room was flooding.
It needs attention.
But right now, the wall is holding.
We can put something underneath the drip.
We can keep an eye on it.
And when we have more light, more information or another pair of hands, we can work out what it needs.
Something needing attention does not always mean everything is about to burst.
We are not renovating the basement today.
No paint charts.
No twelve-step improvement plan.
No expectation that because we've found the problem, you now have to fix the problem.
You are allowed to have an unfinished basement and still live in the house.
Today, we turned on a light. That counts.
There might be another switch.
We can't quite see it from here yet.
Maybe tomorrow the light will reach a little further. Maybe someone else will come down with a torch. Maybe we'll realise the switch was closer than we thought.
And perhaps eventually we'll turn it on and see the whole basement.
You don't have to find that switch tonight.
For right now.
We're keeping this simple.
You don't have to leave yet.
But if you want another light, another person, or somewhere else to go, there are a few options.
